FAQ

How a CH buffer works

The buffer is designed to store an appropriate amount of energy (heat) when it is cheaper and to supply the heating system with the appropriate parameter (temperature) when necessary. Energy storage is beneficial if we have energy available at a lower tariff rate. Ultimately, this solution translates into lower bills for energy used for heating purposes.

When to use a CH buffer

A buffer is generally used when there is an opportunity to utilize a second (cheaper) electricity tariff for heating purposes. This solution helps reduce energy bills needed for home heating. The use of a buffer can also have very positive effects when combined with a photovoltaic installation. For example, if our home requires 8000 kWh of energy for heating and our PV system has 10 kWp capacity, this means that after subtracting the energy used for hot water (approximately 3000 kWh) and household needs (appliances, electronics, lighting) another 3000 kWh, we are left with 4000 kWh for heating purposes. Naturally, we do not consume all the energy produced by the PV system immediately, so we arent left with 4000 kWh as a simple calculation would suggest, but approximately 3200 kWh. As we can see, we are roughly short of 4800 kWh for heating purposes. Purchasing this amount of energy at a cheaper tariff will result in significant financial savings.

Which CH buffer can be recommended for a heat pump

How to properly select a buffer for central heating (CH) and domestic hot water (DHW)

When it comes to selecting the right size buffer for a heating installation, it is best to entrust this to a specialized installation company. The capacity of the buffer depends on several factors. For example, the heating power demand of the building or the type of heating system used (e.g., underfloor heating, radiators). If we want to replenish energy in the buffer only during the second (cheaper) electricity tariff, we need to store a sufficiently large amount of heat so that during hours when energy is more expensive, there is no need to replenish it. I will use an example:

If a building requires 8kW of power, and an underfloor heating system is used where the temperature is maintained at 30 degrees, and the buffer will be charged to a temperature of 80 degrees, the buffer capacity should be 800 liters. The discharge time is crucial here—meaning the 7-hour period between 3:00 PM and 10:00 PM when the buffer is not being recharged (as energy is more expensive), yet heat is most needed.
